Wordle: Know All About the Viral Word Game

Are you aware of the word Wordle? What is Wordle? You must be aware of the global phenomenon that is the viral word game by this point. But in case you want to gather some info about this game, I have explained in this blog everything you need to know.

What is Wordle?

Wordle is a simple word game that can find online. It’s simple, enjoyable, and, like a crossword puzzle, can only be played once per day. A new word of the day is introduced every 24 hours, and it is up to you to figure out what it is. The website does an excellent job of explaining the rules:

Players are given six chances to correctly guess a five-letter word generated at random by Wordle. As shown above in the image, if you place the right letter in the right place, it appears green. A correct letter in the wrong place appears yellow. And a letter that is not in the word in any spot appears in Gray.

You can enter a total of six words, which means you can enter five burner words to learn about the letters and their placements. Then you only have one chance to use wordle hints. You can also try for speed and guess the word of the day in three, two, or even one go. Simple but highly engaging game.

Is it a word game?

Yeah, it’s just a word game. It’s a super popular game, Wordle has 3 million players around the world who play it daily, as per the research. Even while it can sound confusing, there are a few small details that have made everyone go absolutely crazy over it.

There’s only one puzzle per day: This raises the stakes to a certain extent. The Wordle can only be attempted once. You have to wait until tomorrow to get a brand-new puzzle if you make a mistake.

Everyone is playing the exact same puzzle: This is critical because it makes it easier to ping your buddy and discuss the day’s puzzle. “Today’s was tough!” “How did you get on?” “Did you get it?” This brings us to the next point…

It’s easy to share your results: After you’ve completed the puzzle for the day, you’re invited to share your Wordle journey for the day. If you tweet the image, it looks like this 👇…

Keep in mind that the letters and words you choose are hidden. In a series of yellow, green, and grey boxes, your journey towards the word is all that is shown.

It is very compelling. If you get it quickly, perhaps on the second or third try, there is a gloating element in which you must show your followers how smart you are and share.

If you succeed it by the skin of your teeth in the sixth attempt, it’s also a cool story. Most importantly, the puzzle has not been spoiled.

So Wordle is just not a word game, it is a conversation starter and an opportunity to brag on social media. That is why it has gone viral.

Tips and tricks of the Wordle

If you think you are a word game perfectionist, you may want to skip the following tips mentioned below and entirely depend on your own instincts. For everyone else who is tired of seeing grey boxes, here are some pointers you might find useful.

Choosing your first word: The first word is, without a doubt, the most important. Choose a word with three vowels and five different letters to maximize the value of your opening gambit. Examples include oration, media, and radio. For some reason, I always use “adieu.” It’s a habit I’m unwilling to break.

Avoid reusing grays: At the bottom of the Wordle board, there is a keyboard that shows which letters are green, yellow, and grey. Reusing letters that have appeared in Gray should be avoided. Yes, this sounds obvious. Coming up with five-letter words that don’t use letters you’ve already tried, on the other hand, can take some time and effort. That effort will be rewarded.

Letters can appear twice: This makes things more difficult, especially if you’re trying to use words four or five but are running out of letters. However, letters frequently reoccur, as evidenced by the fact that words like chill, sissy, and ferry were once the right responses.

Who made Wordle?

Wordle is an online word game. Wordle is developed by software engineer Josh Wardle. Wardle originally designed the game for himself and a partner. People who spend a lot of time online might recognize Wardle as the brains behind Place, a social experiment/collaborative art project that, in April 2017, drove the internet into a frenzy.

The place was a public online area where anyone may compete for the things that were drawn. Large, wide groups ended up competing for space on this enormous online canvas.

It finally looks like this:

Wordle was mentioned in The New York Times in November, but it really took off when the shared element was added.

In a Reddit post, Wardle said “he wanted Wordle to feel like a croissant,” a “delightful snack” that’s enjoyed occasionally.” This is explicitly why there’s only one puzzle per day. “Enjoyed too often,” he explained, “and they lose their charm,” Wardle says.

New York Times acquisition

On January 31st, 2022, The New York Times acquired Wordle from creator Josh Wardle for an “undisclosed price in the low-seven figures.”

According to Wardle, “game has gotten bigger than I ever imagined” and added he’s “just one person.”

The game will eventually become a part of the New York Times subscription puzzle service, but Wardle ensured that Wordle would remain free to play and that existing streaks would be preserved.

“It is important to me that, as Wordle grows, it continues to provide a great experience to everyone,” Wardle said. “Given this, I am incredibly pleased to announce that I’ve reached an agreement with The New York Times for them to take over running Wordle going forward.”

Wordle Alternatives

There have been clones since Wordle’s success. There are numerous clones. Some have been cynical cash grabs, but many have been unique, interesting alternatives

  • Worldle asks you to select countries based on their outline.
  • Squabble is a multiplayer game, the Battle Royale version of Wordle.
  • Dordle makes you solve two Wordles simultaneously.
  • Quordle offers players four Wordle-style riddles to solve.
  • Heardle is billed as “a respectful homage to Wordle, with a musical twist”. Before attempting to identify the song, players hear the first second of a song “semi-randomly plucked from a long list of popularly streamed artists.”
  • Crosswordle
